THE ARTS SOCIETY SOUTH DOWNS JUBILEE CELEBRATION

The Arts Society South Downs celebrated the Jubilee of NADFAS/The Arts Society on 5th September 2018  with a special lecture hosted by West Dean College. Making use of the Auditorium, a copious barn now converted into a lecture theatre, a sell-out audience welcomed Malcolm Kenwood, a former police officer specialising in art theft and art forgery, who delivered a powerful talk on the disappearance of this now iconic painting between 1911 and 1913, when it was apparently stolen from the Louvre in Paris and eventually recovered in Italy, from whence it was returned to Paris. The forensic details of Malcom's account were as impressive as his appreciation of its artistic significance and the evaluation of the security measures at art galleries, then and now. Then followed a well-catered lunch in the main building of the College, with a brief congratulation on the success of the local society from the Sussex Area Chairman and an expression of hopes for the future.
